Faircado simplifies the search for quality pre-owned items by aggregating listings from various trusted platforms, ensuring a seamless and eco-conscious shopping experience. Currently, the online second-hand market is fragmented, messy, and time-consuming, so Faircado is creating a movement where the experience of buying second-hand is better than buying new. To date, we’ve built a browser extension that finds second-hand alternatives as you shop online as normal (check it out it’s pretty cool). We're on a mission to scale our user-friendly platform to millions of users, making a tangible impact on the environment and consumer habits.

As a search-focused software engineer, your impact will be integral to the success of Faircado.

Key responsibilities include:

• Design, develop, and maintain a robust and scalable search engine using Kotlin and Elasticsearch.
• Implement similarity search functionalities for various input types, including images, text, and other feature vectors.
• Optimize search performance and ensure efficient retrieval of relevant results.
• Collaborate with the team to understand user needs and translate them into technical requirements.
• Identify and implement new technologies and best practices to enhance the search experience.
• Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code.
• Participate in code reviews and knowledge sharing within the team.

Requirements

We Need You To Have…

• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in a similar role.
• Strong experience with software development in Kotlin or any other JVM languages.
• In-depth knowledge of search engine architecture and principles (e.g., relevance ranking, retrieval models).
• Experience with Elasticsearch or similar search index solutions.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and scalability concepts.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• A passion for learning and staying up-to-date with the latest technologies.
• Fluent in English and ready to join us in the heart of Berlin, Germany.

Bonus points:

• Experience with other search technologies (e.g., Apache Solr, Lucene).
• Knowledge of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) techniques.
• Experience working in a startup environment.
