We are looking for an experienced Mobile Software Engineer with strong expertise in native iOS and Android development to build and maintain the mobile applications at the core of Custom Surgical’s products.
This role requires deep hands-on experience with Swift and Kotlin, solid engineering fundamentals, and the ability to work close to hardware, imaging, and data-heavy workflows. You will work on mobile software used daily in clinical environments, where reliability, performance, and efficiency are critical.
You will directly contribute to Custom Surgical’s mission by enabling robust data capture, smooth clinical workflows, and seamless integration between mobile devices, hardware, and cloud systems.
Tasks
- Design, develop, and maintain native mobile applications for iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin);
- Work close to device hardware, including camera pipelines and low-level APIs;
- Implement efficient image and video capture, processing, and storage workflows;
- Integrate and manage FFmpeg or similar multimedia pipelines;
- Handle large volumes of data efficiently, both locally on-device and over networks;
- Ensure high performance, stability, and reliability in production environments;
- Collaborate with backend, cloud, and hardware teams on end-to-end solutions;
- Improve existing codebases with a focus on maintainability and performance;
- Contribute to technical decisions around mobile architecture and tooling.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional experience in native mobile development;
- Strong expertise in Swift (iOS) and Kotlin (Android);
- Solid understanding of mobile app architecture and lifecycle management;
- Experience working with camera APIs, media pipelines, or hardware-adjacent features;
- Experience handling large files and mass storage, both local and network-based;
- Familiarity with multimedia tools such as FFmpeg or similar;
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and clean coding practices;
- Fluency in English (spoken and written);
Not sufficient on their own (but acceptable as complements):
- Flutter, React Native, or other cross-platform frameworks without strong native experience.
Nice to have (but not required):
- Experience in medical devices, healthcare, or regulated environments;
- Familiarity with cloud-backed sync or offline-first architectures;
- Experience optimizing performance, memory usage, and battery consumption;
- Experience working in a startup or fast-growing company.
What we expect from Custom Surgical Candidates:
- You are an owner — you take end-to-end responsibility for complex technical problems and drive long-term improvements;
- You have a growth mindset and care about code quality and long-term maintainability;
- You’re proactive and solutions-oriented — you work across teams to unblock progress and deliver outcomes when it matters;
- You are open, sincere, and comfortable giving and receiving feedback;
- You thrive in an international, young, and flexible company;
- You communicate clearly with engineers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders;
- You are pragmatic and comfortable working close to hardware and real-world constraints.
Benefits
- Time flexibility and a trust-based working culture;
- Home office when needed, with regular on-site collaboration in Munich;
- No unnecessary bureaucracy — high autonomy and real ownership;
- WellPass/Deutschlandticket + JobRad bike leasing with insurance;
- Direct impact on products used in real clinical environments worldwide;
- Exposure to hardware–software integration and performance-critical systems.
