To achieve this, we rely on a modern, event-driven architecture using Kafka, REST APIs, NoSQL databases, and microservices written in Java and Kotlin. Our system landscape runs entirely on AWS. We own the full lifecycle of our services — from design and development to deployment and monitoring.
About your new role
Design, implement, and maintain robust, scalable microservices using Kotlin/Java and related technologies.
Take end-to-end ownership in our DevOps culture — from concept and architecture to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
Shape our technical direction through architecture decisions, technical design reviews, and long-term platform evolution.
Improve our engineering platform by advancing CI/CD pipelines, observability, and Infrastructure as Code practices.
Collaborate closely with marketing and teams across idealo to deliver reliable tracking and billing systems, while raising the quality bar through clean code, testing, pair programming, code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
Skills & Requirements
Several years of professional experience in backend development with Java and/or Kotlin, ideally in distributed, event-driven systems.
Solid experience with Spring Boot and building RESTful APIs.
Familiarity with event-driven architectures (Kafka) and messaging patterns; experience running such systems in production is a strong plus.
Experience working in Kubernetes environments, ideally within a cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS).
Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g. AWS CDK, Terraform) and a good understanding of modern CI/CD practices.
You are comfortable operating and monitoring your own applications — ownership, reliability, and observability matter to you.
Bonus: Experience with CI pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions) and automated delivery setups.
Nice to have: Frontend development skills using TypeScript/JavaScript (e.g. React) and a willingness to occasionally support frontend work.
You challenge assumptions respectfully and use data and reasoning to debate ideas—then fully commit once a decision is made to ensure alignment and momentum.
