Tasks

What You'll Do

Serving as a Backend Engineer and a vital part of our core team, you will have a significant impact on guiding our architectural choices and technical direction. You will receive full end-to-end control over the underlying systems that power our product capabilities, spanning from the initial database schema to observability dashboards and API responses.

Total system ownership: You will take full responsibility for the systems you build, overseeing the entire process from initial database modeling and API design to final deployment and ongoing monitoring. You will actively evolve our architectural foundations, ensuring our Effect & TypeScript codebase remains exceptionally robust, type-safe, and easy to maintain.
Engineer complex logic, going beyond standard endpoints: Your primary focus will center on the fundamental heavy lifting within our platform. Rather than just pushing out basic CRUD operations, you will design the intricate asynchronous workflows, advanced AI pipelines, and complex authorization rules required to solve difficult user problems.

Past examples of initiatives you could take on:

Robust authorization engine engineered to handle growing intricacies across diverse institutional settings through the integration of ReBac and ABAC
Advanced AI pipelines created to extract textual and visual information from documents leveraging multiple models, then mapping those embedded topics directly into knowledge graphs
Architecture migration shifting our underlying infrastructure from a fullstack monolith over to a rigorously type-safe API layer constructed with Effect

Infrastructure: Cloudflare (Workers, Workflows, R2, KV, Hyperdrive), Google Cloud (Gemini, Cloud Run)
Tooling: Axiom, Sentry, PostHog, Langfuse, Stripe
AI: Vercel AI SDK

Requirements

What We're Looking For

2+ years of software engineering experience with strong TypeScript skills
Startup experience: You’re comfortable in fast-paced, evolving environments
Balanced AI approach: You knew how to code before Cursor and Claude Code, but understand how to leverage them effectively
Product passion: High identification with our mission to transform education
Bonus: Experience with authz systems, infra/devops, AI, or frontend work (Next.js/React)
