What is Anmeldung?
Anmeldung is the process of registering yourself and your residential address at a local citizens office Bürgeramt. You can do this at any Bürgeramt responsible in your city or town. When you move to Germany, you are required to register your address within the first 2 weeks.
When you do your Anmeldung for the first time, you get your tax ID Steueridentifikationsnummer - but you don't need to register yourself to get a tax ID.
If you have a residence permit and you change your address, you will get your updated address as a sticker on the back of your residence permit.
Requirements on when you need to do your Anmeldung within first 2 weeks:
If you moved to Germany from abroad
If you moved to a different city within Germany
If you moved to a different apartment within the same city
Apart from rare exceptions, you cannot do the registration online. You have to visit your nearest Bürgeramt physically and this requires an appointment in most cases. For first time registration, you need to bring documents like:
Your identity card
Passport, national ID card, etc.
Registration form - Anmeldeformular
Confirmation from your landlord for moving in - Einzugsbestätigung / Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
Marriage certificate (if applicable)
Anmeldung is free and is done immediately. You will receive a piece of paper printed out.
